Adam Hoggard – Precision ag tightening up farm efficiency in Derbyshire

Beef and grassland farmer Adam Hoggard in partnership with his father Kevin, introduced precision ag to tighten up mowing efficiencies – two years on and it’s a part of the everyday.

Between his home and contractual grassland work, there are 1,000 acres to manage. But when Adam wanted to improve his mowing efficiencies by reducing overlaps, he faced a potential cost of £3,000 for a baler control box.

“It was more justifiable to upgrade to a better guidance system over the cost of a control box – so I had the ISOBUS compatible Trimble GFX-750 with Nav-900 antenna installed,” he explains.

Since adopting the upgrade he uses it for everything from mowing and rowing, to chain harrowing and fertiliser application. “Once you’ve created the fields and set up your implements it’s easy to use,” he says.

“It generates its own infill pattern, all I have to do is map the headlands and set the A-B line. Next time I’m working the field, I can select what’s on the back and it’ll keep me in line.”

The automated headland turns have also improved his running time and accuracy. “With the autosteer and the accuracy I get the job done quicker and I’ve noticed that compaction is less problematic.”

Adam really hasn’t noticed the change from AS communication to Vantage. “The level of service has always been excellent. When the weather held up calibration of the technology, it was no bother for them to come back out at a better time and they didn’t penalise me for it.”

So would he recommend Vantage and Trimble equipment to others? “Yes. The software is easy to use and not limited to a certain make of tractor, and most things are remotely upgraded – you don’t need a whole new system each time,” he explains. “Equally, if there’s ever an issue they resolve it quickly and that’s what you want, no stress.”
